In 1987, Canada withdrew the $1 banknote from circulation and replaced it with the $1 coin. The new coin represented a significant departure from the previous Voyageur Dollar series: its diameter was reduced from 32.13 mm to 26.72 mm, its shape changed from round to an eleven-sided polygon, and its composition shifted to nickel with a bronze plating.
The reverse design was also updated, replacing the Voyageur theme with the image of a Canadian loon. The public quickly adopted the nickname “loonie” for the new coin.
Composition: 91.5% nickel, 8.5% bronze
11-sided: 26.72 mm
Weight: 7.00 g
Thickness: 1.95 mm
Edge: Plain
The coin in the pictures is a circulation issue in mint state condition.
