To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the North West Mounted Police, later known as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
In 1973, for the RCMP 25-cent coin, a new obverse was introduced featuring a smaller, more detailed portrait and fewer rim beads positioned farther from the edge. However, a small number of coins were struck using the 1972 obverse, resulting in two varieties for that year: the Large Bust and the Small Bust. It is believed that no more than 10,000 Large Bust coins were struck for circulation.
Both types can be found in coins issued for circulation and in non-circulation sets.
